[Featured Stock] Woollen Kits.
Posted on January 17th, 2012 by chazOn Saturday a much anticipated box from a Memphis LP distributor showed up on my doorstep. Inside it contained a stack of lovely garagey wax imported from Australia. Here’s a quick glimpse into one of the many pieces in the package…

Sydney, Australia based label R.I.P. Society Records has been on a phenomenal bender of good releases since they started pressing records in 2008 – Circle Pit, Royal Headache, Golden Staph, Straight Arrows, Kitchen’s Floor, Dead Farmers, etc. I’m of the recently converted, wooed by the staggering, garage whirlwind Royal Headache LP from 2011. Judging from their roster though, I should have been paying more attention earlier!
Now as 2012 has come around the corner, they’ve gone and kicked it off well with a great full length release from The Woollen Kits out of Melbourne. The Kits approach jangly garage pop from a wonderfully lethargic, humming angle. The influences can clearly be traced back to the shorter songs of the Velvet Underground and the oddball approach to pop as explored by Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers, but the band also seems to have a bit of lingering, more modern Beat Happening blood traceable in their lineage. Their melodies can come down as drowsy and slow (which I happen to love), while the haze that envelops the music combined with the treble of the guitars and snaps of the snare gives it a warmth and comfort – a familiarity. It’s a great listen for fans of lofi and primitive garage pop.
RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: The Beets, Beat Happening, Velvet Underground, Human Switchboard, Royal Headache, etc.
