[Featured Stock] Hiss Golden Messenger.
Posted on December 6th, 2011 by chazAfter reading the great write-up of this new record over at the Indy, I’m a little hesitant to say much about it in this post. That review is intimidatingly spot-on and well worth the read. So, I’ll just say how much I love it, post a track and tell you it’s a necessity for this year…

Hiss Golden Messenger – Super Blue (Two Days Clean)
So yes, Poor Moon is indeed a necessary LP. And I love it a lot. It’s necessity increases even more if you’re local to Durham or the Triangle at large. Fitting in easily next to your Meg Baird, Steve Gunn, Bonnie Prince Billy and Bill Callahan LPs, Hiss Golden Messenger is profound folk with a wandering, familiar vibe. At the heart of each song lies a swaying, brilliant melody reminiscent of 70s AM pop – which is actually way more appealing than I realize it sounds – obscured by a slight tendency towards outsider psych folk.
For this LP M.C. Taylor organized a hell of a line-up and their fine attention to detail, all while maintaining a loose air, definitely shows. He’s joined by his former bandmate/co-songwriter from his The Court and Spark days, Scott Hirsch as well as Hans Chew (D. Charles Speer & the Helix), Matt Cunitz (John Vanderslice) and Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers) among others. Local avant/jazz saxophonist Crowmeat Bob and local drummer Terry Lonergan also appear on the record.
I encourage anyone who has bought this LP lately (and it’s a handful of ya) to please comment on it here! Thanks!
