Hunchback
HUNCHBACK – 7/13/2008 @ BCHQ, Durham, NC.
Recording of Full Set.
(played with the Ergs, Drowsies and Begin-Agains.)
Having used two of their pictures from the same show in the header there, I figured Hunchback would be the most appropriate band to kick off this section. Trekking down from their home town of New Brunswick, NJ, the group swung through Durham with the Ergs on a random, slow and sticky Sunday night in July. Way back in the way gone days of 2008.
Taking huge influence from the early days of Touch & Go Records, Hunchback plow through noisy, chaotic psych-punk inspired by classic-era Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid and late-night horror movies. This was a truly fine evening as temperatures inside the cool-less, brick heating box of the BCHQ building sent a sweaty haze through the crowd and t-shirts stuck immediately to skin upon stepping across the threshold. A scene ripe for any slasher flick. In no way could the atmosphere itself have been more perfect as the band pulsed and surged, crashing reckless through their paranoid dark squawl. Surprisingly, a picture was able to catch some of the chaos contained in this 25 minute set – that would be singer/noise-synther Craig attacking singer/guitarist Mike with a walker in the middle of the audience while screeching into the mic hanging from his mouth. Curious?

Sadly Hunchback is no more. They are great people and they were an amazing band to see. They are forever sealed on tape, CD and LP though through Don Giovanni and Freedom School Records. Look into their other bands the Weird Fantasy Band and Black Wine.
