Davila 666 / Dex Romweber & the New Romans / Pinche Gringo
@ Local 506 – Wednesday, August 5th.

I’ve mentioned Davila 666 on the blog before as a band I’ve been into a lot lately. Almost a year ago, In the Red Records unleashed unto us an uncompromising, raw, jagged, loose, chaotically tight garage record by a Puerto Rican band under said moniker. On first listen the sound and fidelity of this record hit me as being just as beautiful as a dubbed cassette tape a buddy’s older brother might have gotten from the back of a punk magazine years ago. Reckless and raw, a couple of years’ worth of dust and grime settled on top of the tracks. Back in that old post, I believe I mentioned something along the lines of the Stooges/Black Lips – the surge and sonicness of the Stooges with the contained abandon of the Lips. Great stuff. I honestly never thought I’d get the chance to see them here in the Triangle. Thank you Glenn for booking this thing! Should be one of the best of the year!!!

Dexter Romweber & the New Romans I don’t really need to intro. As the front man of every garage kid’s personal favorite band – The Flat Duo Jets – he still never seems to disappoint. Especially in a smaller, more intimate club like the 506. Get hold of a cold beer before they takes the stage! Dark and dramatic, rootsy gospel garage blues creep from the heart of this swamp-bound beast. Write that one down and revisit it later, yikes.

If you end up missing Pinche Gringo as the opener – you done screwed up. This is Josh from the legendary NC 60s garage-throwback trio, the Spinns. Gringo is his scathing, punchdrunk, slurred one man band stomp. Kick drums laid at his feet with thick reverb and distortion murkin’ up his vocals and a twangy, swamped-up guitar driving the whole rickety show down the road. If you’re a fan of Mark Sultan and his various records/duos/aliases (BBQ, King Khan & BBQ Show, Mark Sultan), this is your thing indeed. Someone please make this man a record.

And just remember kiddos, you don’t have to be a shirtless, sports-jacket-wearing member of the All American Rejects to know yer true boogied-out rock’n'roll. I need to stop watching late night television.
