[Stuff to Do] Saturday Night.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH @ The Pinhook, Durham, NC
10pm. 7bucks. (club info)
PIPE (Chapel Hill/Durham, NC | Merge, Jesus Christ, Amish)
CHEST PAINS (Durham, NC | self-released)
THE BASTAGES (Durham, NC | self-released)
Don’t be alarmed. If you hear rumbling, manic yelling and breaking bottles oozing from the Pinhook into the streets this Saturday night, it’s just us old folks getting a face-blast from the Triangle’s old guard. Pipe has been back on the stage, assaulting the crowd with noise and crushed beer cans every six months or so since they first reunited a couple years back. Each return show still stings and soaks like a first-time reunion party. Since their inception in the early 90s, their brand of garage punk has been confrontational, revved up, sleazed out and sinisterly soulful. They rank in line with the New Bomb Turks, the Quadrajets, Supersuckers, Mono Men, Mummies and all those other mid-90s greats who put the angry, distorted fun back into garage rock’n'roll. If you’re a fan of garage rawk and you still haven’t seen them, do yourself a favor….
The Chest Pains and The Bastages open. The Pains are a gnarly punk three piece who have been around off and on for the last seven years or so cobbled together from music critics, amp repair wizards and conspiracy theory gurus. Their sound is an angry hybrid of California screwball punk – think Circle Jerks, Flipper and the Minutemen. It’s an awesome, wiry mess. Like the Chest Pains, the Bastages mostly spent their teenage years embedded in the 80s hardcore scene and is fronted by ex-Ugly American Danny Hooley and bassed by ex-Ugly American Chris Eubank. This will be my first time seeing them (embarrassing, I know) and I’m pretty psyched.
See ya out!!
